Achievements Until Now:
The project started in 1997 with visits to prisons and distribution of hygiene - and writing material to prisoners. During the years the number of partners involved in the project increased and more and more prisons were attended. In 2000 a start was made with support to ex-prisoners by providing them with a place to stay and time to adapt to a normal live in society. These activities developed into a separate project focused on rehabilitation of ex-prisoners. The support to the prisoners project was extended with support to families of prisoners. About 9.000 prisoners are visited more than twice a year, receiving humanitarian aid and part of them receive pastoral care. 40 families of prisoners receive humanitarian aid or pastoral care annually.

9,000 prisoners, 10 ex-prisoners, 40 families of prisoners
Problem Program Addresses:
The living conditions in Russian prisons are hard. Food is inadequate and of poor quality. Warm clothing and medicines are lacking and also products as soap, shaving-tackle, toothbrushes and toothpaste. Prisons are disreputable as a source of tuberculosis. After discharge from prison, normal life is difficult to take up. Families of prisoners are often female-headed, with no sustainable source of income, because the main income source is in prison.
