Project/Sector Name:
Child Care & Development - Transition homes, Moldova
Partner(s):
Cornerstone, Hope to Children, Floresti
Geographical Area:
Selemet and Cimislia, at the South of Moldova
Floresti, in the North of Moldova.
Start Sector:
2000
Achievements Until Now:
In 2000 Dorcas started to support the first Transition home in Moldova. In 2005 Dorcas started to support the Cornerstone foundation. In 2006 they opened the doors of a new transition home. From September 2007, 20 girls from different orphanages, live in Selemet Transition Home. The beneficiaries learn the necessary life skills they lacked in the institution. Currently, there are 10 boys and 20 girls living in Selemet (girls) and Cimislia (boys) transition homes, and 70 children and adolescents from Floresti and neighbourhood villages attended seven workshops in Floresti.
Target Group:
20 boys and 40 girls will be rehabilitated over a period of 3 years.
Problem Program Addresses:
Orphans live in very vulnerable situations in Moldova: not having a family, these children are doomed to go around and look for all the possible and impossible ways to survive. The government of Moldova does not support these children in getting a normal education, a job and/or shelter. Some boys are taken by the gangs and often end up in prison. For the girls, the situation is even worse: the girls often become targets for human traffickers. They are promised a good job somewhere in Italy, Greece, Spain, or other countries. These girls accept the offering and end up working in forced prostitution. The majority of the assisted children however, return to their poor relatives who are unable to provide for the children. The institution graduates are not adapted to social life. They lack the necessary skills like self-care, cleaning, cooking. These children often need a transition period in order to adapt to the society outside the institution.
Purpose:
To empower the boys and girls from orphanages to reintegrate into society.
Main Activities:
Renovation of the building. The boys and girls are being trained different life skills. Social workers teach the boys and girls how to behave in the society. The boys and girls are connected with Christian families that invite them for a short stay over holidays. The boys and girls are helped with school assignments. The beneficiaries will attend different vocational/educational courses that will help them find a job in the future and provide for themselves.
