Project/Sector Name:
Child Care & Development - Rehabilitation Underprivileged chlidren, Albania
Partner(s):
Mission Emanuel
Geographical Area:
Korce, Albania
Start Sector:
The support to mothers in the maternity clinic of Korca started in the early 1990's. In 2007, the partner begun focussing on abandoned babies as well.
Achievements Until Now:
15 mothers that had abandoned their babies have received counselling and support. The partner also provides material and medical support and the mothers that take the babies back in their homes are supported with vocational training. Once a week, new mothers are visited in the hospital and given clothing and blanket to the babies.
Target Group:
Mothers who have abandoned their babies for economical and social reasons.
Problem Program Addresses:
In the Korce Maternity hospital, there are approximately 600 births/year. The number of children born to unwed mothers is approximately 15-20/year. The number of children whose parents at birth give them over to local orphanages due to economic problems and other reasons is approximately 15/year. Some parents who have abandoned their children are willing to take them back and through this program, many are able to take the responsibility for their children again. Poverty is one of the main reasons for the unwed mothers to abandon their babies and/or that their families do not acknowledge the baby.
Purpose:
To reduce the number of babies abandoned in Korce.
Main Activities:
Counselling, home visits. Provision of material and medical support. Vocational training. Visiting new mothers in maternity clinics.
