Tons of cement for Lesobeng

On the weekend of the 8th August, volunteers with twenty three 4X4 vehicles transported 10 tons of cement to the remote village of Lesobeng, high into the mountains of Lesotho. Loading cement for Lesobeng

Members of ASPASA (Aggregate Of Sand Producers Association Of Southern Africa) & SARMA (South African Ready Mix Association) had approached Dorcas Aid to see how they could voluntarily offer their time and 4X4 vehicles. Added to this offer was a donation of 10 tons of cement from Natal Portland Cement. The offer came at just the right time. Dorcas needed cement for a Lesotho agriculture project, eight hours drive from Maseru the capital. At least 6 hours of the route required the use of 4 wheel drive vehicles to navigate numerous treacherous mountain passes. Added to the challenge was the risk of snow falls and rainfall which regularly close off the roads.

ASPASA & SARMA took up the challenge and successfully transported the cement to Lesobeng with only one bag breaking on the route. Their generous help has ensured that Dorcas Aid and their partner, the Lesobeng Community Organisation are now able to begin constructing small cement dams and water tanks. The purpose behind the construction of the dams and tanks is to help improve water conservation and water harvesting methods for the agriculture programme in the area.Convoy of cement for Lesobeng

Thank you to those members of ASPASA & SARMA who gave up their weekend & vehicles to support Dorcas Aid's work; and in addition a big thanks to Natal Portland Cement for the donation of cement.
