Women acting as agents of change in Pakistan

Pakistani women were trained to be the agents of change in their own basti, small community. Jemeela is one of the them. She was educated about different health topics such as risks of open defecation, the need of washing hands and use of mosquito nets. This mother, who usually works the fields, tells: ‘Most of our health problems are because of our unhygienic living practices. We need to change those practices to ensure that our families could live a healthier life and save money that we can spend on medication'.

Jemeela was encouraged to train other females of her basti. In that way she could share the knowedge that she received to improve the health and hygiene of her family. ‘Taking training and then relaying it to other female members of the community was one of the best experiences of my life', she says.

This approach has empowered the women in the community. Jameela: ‘Though we females do not have much vial influence in the vilalge matters, we can, however, make a difference at the household level'. They are generally discouraged from going to school and feel privileged that they are given such a responsible assignment.

Rajanpur District is located between River Indus and Suleiman mountain range. Due to its location the whole district is at risk of yearly monsoon flood. After the 2010 floods, efforts were initiated to change the lives of the people of Wah Machka village in a sustainable way. So far, focus has been on water and sanitation solutions, disaster risk reduction, improvement of water supply lines and improvement of crucial roads.
