Volunteers

What is a volunteer?

A volunteer is a person who works for a community for the benefit of the poor or environment. The word comes from Latin and can be translated as "Will" (as doing something out of ones free will).

By definition a volunteer worker does not get paid or receive compensation for services rendered other than reimbursement for work expenses.

No individual or organisation alone can change the the world in relation to poverty. Dorcas Aid realises this and has chosen a path of working with others to help to alleviate poverty. The work of the volunteer is vital to the work of Dorcas Aid. Volunteering can take on many forms and anyone who is willing to help the poor can qualify.

A recent example of working together with volunteers was when assistance was provided to an HIV/AIDS project in Lesotho. Members of the Boksburg Baptist church assisted with their time and material goods to support the work of HIV/AIDS training in the mountains of Lesotho. The beneficiaries were 700 children from 5 schools in Lesobeng, 8 hours of 4 wheel drive from the capital Maseru. Without these volunteers this work could not have taken place. As a result 700 children have a practical knowledge of HIV/AIDS and the choice to avoid infection.

In what ways can I possibily volunteer?

1. Offering time & practical help at a Dorcas Aid project (project work)
2. Offer assistance during a time of crisis or emergency (relief aid)
3. Offer time at the Dorcas Office or charity shop (administration)
